Brainwaves to Brushstrokes: French Art Group Creates Landscapes from the Mind


Imagine a world where art transcends the physical and delves into the realm of the mind. This is no longer the stuff of science fiction, thanks to the innovative work of the French art collective Obvious. By harnessing the power of brainwaves and artificial intelligence (AI), Obvious is creating a new frontier in artistic expression – landscapes directly translated from the human imagination.

Merging Art and Science: The “Mind to Image” Project

Obvious, comprised of Pierre Fautrel, Hugo Caselles-Dupre, and Gauthier Vernier, is no stranger to pushing artistic boundaries. In 2018, they gained international recognition for selling an AI-generated artwork for over €400,000. Their latest project, titled “Mind to Image,” takes this exploration a step further by incorporating brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

The process involves a member of Obvious undergoing an MRI scan at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris, while focusing on specific thoughts or images. The MRI machine captures their brain activity, particularly from the visual cortex, the region responsible for processing visual information.

Unlocking the Mind’s Eye: Challenges and Possibilities

However, translating brainwaves into a coherent image is no easy feat. Alizee Lopez-Persem, a researcher at the Brain Institute, acknowledges that while reconstructing viewed images from brain activity has been possible for a decade, deciphering imagined landscapes presents a significant challenge.

To bridge this gap, Obvious utilizes MindEye, an open-source program capable of partially reconstructing viewed images from brain activity. They combine MindEye’s data with their own custom AI program to refine and interpret the captured brainwaves.

The process is multifaceted. In one approach, the participant concentrates on existing pictures, attempting to mentally replicate them through their brainwaves. Another method involves focusing on written descriptions of landscapes, such as a lush rainforest or a volcanic eruption. This repetition is crucial, as Obvious conducts the MRI scans multiple times over a 10-hour period to create a substantial database for their AI.

The Final Product: A Blend of Imagination and Artificial Intelligence

The resulting artwork is a unique blend of human imagination and AI interpretation. While the initial attempt at visualizing a volcano might not perfectly match the artist’s conception, the final piece retains the essence of the mental image – a fiery mountain with flowing lava set against a bright background.

Beyond the Image: The Future of Neuro-Art

The “Mind to Image” project pushes the boundaries of artistic expression and opens doors to exciting possibilities. This innovative approach raises intriguing questions: Can AI become a tool to bridge the gap between the artist’s intent and the final creation?
