Dominant Sumit Antil Retains World Para Athletics Championship Title in F64 Javelin Throw


Sumit Antil, the reigning Paralympic champion, cemented his position as the world’s best F64 javelin thrower by clinching the gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan, on Tuesday, May 21st, 2024. This victory marks his second consecutive World Championship gold and further solidifies his global dominance in the sport.

Antil, a 25-year-old athlete from Haryana, India, has a remarkable track record. He secured the gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics and triumphed at the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships in Paris. In Kobe, he displayed unwavering focus and exceptional technique, launching the javelin a distance of 69.50 meters to secure the top spot on the podium.

His opening throw was a promising 68.17 meters, and he followed it up with a commanding throw of 69.50 meters in his second attempt. While his subsequent throws didn’t surpass this mark, they all remained well above 64 meters, showcasing his consistency. This performance further establishes him as a force to be reckoned with in the world of Para athletics.

Para Athletics Classification

The F64 classification in Para athletics is designated for athletes with leg amputation, short stature, or other impairments that affect leg function. Throwers in this category compete from a seated position.

He holds the current world record in the F64 javelin throw with a staggering throw of 73.29 meters, achieved at the Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023. Additionally, he holds the World Para Athletics Championships record of 70.83 meters, set during his gold medal performance at the 2023 edition in Paris.

India’s Stellar Performance at World Para Athletics Championships

Antil’s gold medal wasn’t the only reason for Indian fans to celebrate. The nation witnessed a phenomenal day at the World Para Athletics Championships, with two more gold medals being added to the tally. Thangavelu Mariyappan secured the top spot in the men’s high jump T63 category with a championship record jump of 1.88 meters. Ekta Bhyan also clinched gold in the women’s F51 club throw event with a season-best throw of 20.12 meters.
