Monsoon Mayhem! Heavy Rain, Heatwave & Thunderstorms to Lash Parts of India

Cyclonic Circulations and Widespread Rainfall in Northeast India

A cyclonic circulation over northeast Bangladesh and another over northeast Assam, combined with strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, will bring widespread rainfall/snowfall to the region for the next five days. This includes Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Residents can expect light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-50 kmph). Sikkim may even experience isolated hailstorms on May 1st.

The intensity of rainfall will vary across the region. Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya are particularly susceptible to heavy rainfall during May 1st-2nd. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura can expect heavy rainfall during May 1st-3rd. Arunachal Pradesh might even experience very heavy rainfall on May 1st & 2nd, while south Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura might see very heavy rainfall on May 2nd.

Fresh Western Disturbance to Affect Northwest India

A fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact northwest India from May 3rd onwards. This will bring scattered light to moderate rainfall/snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning to Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh between May 3rd-6th. Residents of West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan can expect isolated very light/light rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning during May 4th-6th.

Strong Winds and Heatwave Warnings

Strong surface winds (25-35 kmph) are likely to prevail over Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from May 1st to 3rd.

Heatwave warnings have been issued for several parts of India.

  • Maximum temperatures in the range of 44-47°C are likely to continue over Gangetic West Bengal, east Jharkhand, north Odisha, and Rayalaseema till May 3rd before subsiding.
  • Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely in many places over Gangetic West Bengal, some parts of Odisha and Bihar, and isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Jharkhand during May 1st-2nd. The intensity is expected to reduce thereafter, with isolated heatwave pockets persisting for the next 3 days.
  • Rayalaseema is likely to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions for the next 3 days, followed by heatwave conditions for the subsequent 2 days.
  • Heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Telangana, Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam during the next 4-5 days. Kerala might see heatwave conditions on May 1st & 2nd, while Tamil Nadu can expect them from May 1st to 3rd.
  • Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat State, and Marathwada might experience heatwave conditions in isolated pockets from May 1st to 5th. Marathwada might see them from May 3rd to 5th.

Hot and Humid Conditions

Hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Coastal Karnataka and Kerala & Mahe during the next 5 days. West Assam might experience similar conditions on May 1st.

Warm Nights

Residents of Chhattisgarh can expect warm nights from May 1st to 3rd. Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada might experience warm nights from May 3rd to 5th. Odisha & Gangetic West Bengal might have warm nights on May 1st & 2nd.
