New Schengen Visa Rules for Indians: Unlock Europe

If you’re an Indian passport holder dreaming of exploring the picturesque streets of Paris, savoring gelato in Rome, or skiing down the slopes of the Swiss Alps, there’s good news! The European Union (EU) has recently adopted more favorable Schengen visa rules for Indian nationals, making travel to Europe easier and more convenient.

What’s Changed?

As of April 18, 2024, Indian nationals residing in India can now apply for a multiple-entry Schengen visa with longer validity. Here are the key changes:

  1. Long-Term, Multi-Entry Visas: Indian travelers can now be issued long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years. This means that if you’ve been a frequent traveler to Schengen countries, you’ll enjoy the convenience of a two-year visa.
  2. Five-Year Visa Option: If your passport has sufficient validity remaining, the two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa. Imagine the possibilities—five years of exploring Europe’s rich cultural heritage, indulging in culinary delights, and creating unforgettable memories.
  3. Equivalent Travel Rights: During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals. You’ll have the freedom to move within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Why the Change?

The decision to ease visa rules comes in the context of strengthened relations between the EU and India. The EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility aims for comprehensive cooperation on migration policy, with a focus on facilitating people-to-people contacts. India is an important partner for the EU, and these visa changes reflect that partnership.

The Schengen area consists of 29 European countries, including EU member states and non-EU countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. These countries have abolished passport control at their mutual borders, allowing travelers to move freely within the area.

Remember that Schengen visas do not grant the right to work, but they open up a world of travel possibilities. So, dust off your travel bucket list, update your passport, and get ready to explore Europe like never before!
