President Murmu, currently on a state visit to Mauritius, addressed a gathering at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Port Louis, emphasizing the deep-rooted historic ties and bilateral cooperation between India and Mauritius. She highlighted India’s economic growth, expressing optimism about the opportunities it presents for Mauritian youth. Notably, she announced the extension of OCI card eligibility to Indian origins up to the 7th generation, enabling more young Mauritians to reconnect with their ancestral land.
President Murmu underscored the comprehensive nature of the India-Mauritius relationship, particularly emphasizing the longstanding development partnership aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the people of Mauritius. She appreciated Mauritius’ gesture of naming a radio station after Mahatma Gandhi and depicting the Dandi Yatra, symbols of shared historical significance.
Highlighting the significance of March 12 for both nations, President Murmu commemorated the historic Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi in India in 1930, and also celebrated it as Mauritius Independence Day. She conveyed warm wishes on this auspicious occasion on behalf of India.
Touching upon the economic front, President Murmu recalled the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement in 2021, marking a significant step towards boosting bilateral trade and strengthening economic ties between India and Mauritius. She also emphasized the importance of defense and military cooperation in meeting Mauritius’ security needs.
During her visit, President Murmu engaged in meetings with top Mauritian leaders and attended the country’s 56th Independence Day celebrations as the Chief Guest. She also witnessed the participation of the Indian Navy contingent in the march, symbolizing the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius.
President Murmu’s announcement of India’s approval of a special provision granting OCI cards to the 7th generation of Indian-origin Mauritians was significant, providing an opportunity for younger generations to reconnect with their Indian heritage. She paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi, highlighting the special significance of March 12, the date of his famous salt march from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in 1930.
