Sailing into the Future: Kochi’s Water Metro Revolutionizes Commute

Kochi, known for its picturesque backwaters and vibrant city life, has embarked on a new journey towards sustainable urban transportation with the commencement of the Kochi Water Metro ferries. This innovative project began operations on April 21, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the city’s infrastructure development.

Connecting High Court and Fort Kochi

The Water Metro ferries connect two pivotal points in the city – the High Court and Fort Kochi. The service is not only a boon for daily commuters but also an attraction for tourists, offering a scenic and efficient travel option. The ferries are designed to be eco-friendly, operating as AC electric-hybrid vessels that promise a comfortable ride.

Affordable and Accessible

One of the key highlights of the Water Metro is its affordability. With tickets priced at just INR 40 per person, it provides an economical mode of transport across the scenic route. The service operates every 20 to 30 minutes between 7 AM and 7 PM, ensuring frequent and convenient access for travelers.

A Boost for Tourism and Local Economy

The introduction of the Water Metro is expected to significantly boost tourism in Fort Kochi, which is an important hub within the city. The ease of accessibility to this historic locale is likely to attract more visitors, thereby benefiting local businesses and the economy.

Cochin Shipyard’s Role

Cochin Shipyard has played a crucial role in this project, delivering the 14th ferry as part of the order placed by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). With a total order of 23 ferries, KMRL aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the connectivity of popular tourist spots.

A Model for Other Cities

Kochi proudly leads India as the first city to initiate a water metro service. The project sets a precedent for other cities to follow, showcasing how waterways can be leveraged to create an efficient and sustainable urban transport system.

The Kochi Water Metro ferries are more than just a mode of transport; they represent a step towards a greener future and a testament to the city’s commitment to innovation. As operations gain momentum, the Water Metro is set to become an integral part of Kochi’s urban landscape, changing the way people commute and experience the city.
