Unprecedented Tie in NEET 2024 Results: 67 Students Score Perfect 720, Raising Concerns

The results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2024 have been met with surprise and controversy. For the first time in the exam’s history, a record-breaking 67 students secured a perfect score of 720, leading to a tie for the coveted All India Rank (AIR) 1 position. This unexpected outcome has sparked discussions about fairness, marking schemes, and the process of awarding ranks.

Reasons Behind the Tie and Public Discontent

The National Testing Agency (NTA), the conducting body for NEET, has attributed the tie to two main factors:

  • Revision of Answer Key: The NTA revised the answer key for one question in the Physics section after the exam. This revision resulted in some students who had initially marked the wrong answer receiving additional marks.
  • Compensatory Marks for Loss of Time: The NTA also awarded compensatory marks to some students due to reported technical glitches or disruptions during the exam. These marks were intended to compensate for the lost time faced by these students.

However, the high number of students receiving perfect scores has raised concerns about the effectiveness of these measures. Critics argue that awarding compensatory marks can be subjective and lead to inconsistencies. Additionally, some question whether a single question revision in Physics could justify such a high number of perfect scores.

Demands for Transparency and Potential Re-exam

The unusual outcome has led to demands for more transparency from the NTA. Students, parents, and educators are calling for a detailed explanation of how compensatory marks were awarded and the criteria used to differentiate the ranks of the 67 toppers for counselling purposes.

Furthermore, some have expressed concerns about the possibility of cheating or irregularities in the exam process. This has led to calls for a re-examination, particularly in light of the eight students from the same examination center in Haryana achieving a perfect score.

The NTA’s Response

The NTA has responded to the controversy by clarifying that the toppers hail from various parts of the country and denying allegations of irregularities at specific centers. They have also stated that the counselling ranks for the 67 toppers have been assigned using decimals, although the specific criteria for this process remain unclear.

Looking Ahead: Ensuring Fairness in NEET

The NEET exam plays a crucial role in determining the future of aspiring medical professionals in India. The current controversy highlights the importance of a robust and transparent marking scheme, along with clear guidelines for awarding compensatory marks. Moving forward, the NTA should consider implementing stricter measures to prevent cheating and ensure a level playing field for all students. Additionally, a more detailed explanation of the counselling rank allocation for the tied toppers would be beneficial to address concerns and maintain public trust in the exam’s integrity.
